Ice Queen. That's what everyone calls Dafne at school. The girl with the striking looks of a Raven Princess but whose cold-steeled touch freezes everyone in her way. Her reputation works for her and she even likes it. People don't mess with her—except for her sister's infuriatingly handsome boyfriend, Ian, who loves pushing her subzero temper to its limits.

Life in Berryford is flowing exactly as she wants it—no drama, no boy trying to get into her pants—until she starts noticing odd, glazed-eyed students everywhere. Something weird is happening and, unusual enough for her, she needs to find out why. But when people start falling into a coma with no reason, among them Dafne's sister, she decides to take the matter in her hands, because if her intuition is right, this isn't something doctors or virologists can fight. This is something…more.

With frustration and guilt leading her way, and Ian forcing himself to her side, Dafne will step onto a road that'll open her eyes to why ignorance is bliss, why hate is so close to love, and why our imagination might be the most dangerous weapon ever known.

Break Away Away Book 1 eBook Tatiana Vila

I wanted to read this book. I really did. Reading the preview, I found the protagonist, Daphne, interesting and engaging. Her prickly relationship with her sister contrasted nicely with the much warmer bond she shared with her Grandmother. At times, the first person narrative did a good job of portraying disaffected teen Daphne's flinty personality and snarky voice. At other times the writing was so clumsily inept as to be nearly incomprehensible.

All too often the text reads like it was written by an sixth-grader struggling to pass english. There are problems with subject/verb agreement, endless awkward adjectives, made-up words ("stringed" instead of "strung", "casted" for "cast") and numerous clunky constructions. Consider the following, in which I believe one sister has just tried to wake the other for school:

"Oh, how could I've missed your sweet voice?" She clasped her hands together in an overly dramatic Broadway-worthy way. "Perhaps the deep knocks on my door, as in let's-throw-the-door-down deep, masked your calling!"

Yikes! It reads like a Babblefish translation from Turkish. What I find difficult to understand is why any author (and I don't mean to single out this one- I've read plenty worse on Amazon) would choose to place such unpolished and incomprehensible work before any audience. It doesn't require a degree in creative writing to fix what's wrong with this manuscript. Which is to say, there really is no excuse. The sad thing is, there might actually be a good story hidden somewhere beneath this pile of moldy word salad.

Break Away Away Book 1 eBook Tatiana Vila Reviews

I'm kind of surprised by some of these reviews. I didn't have trouble connecting with the characters at all, and I really enjoyed this book. I also like her other book a lot, but I have to say that I actually like this one a little better. I know it will probably be awhile since I'm still waiting for Alluvion, but I can't wait until the next book in this series comes out!
Loved this book. Only wish the author would write the sequel. Tatiana Vila has been MIA for 4 years.
Who wants to be called a Ice Queen by every single person at school? Well, Dafne is that Ice Queen. I actually liked this book. I was afraid I weren't going to like it, but jumped right into it an bought this book.

I am not sorry.

Dafne is a very strong character. Yet, she is also terrible vulnerable. She has lost so much in her life, and she has built up walls around her to keep away unwanted emotions. Which is why the Ice Queen nickname came into the picture. But really, Dafne is a very sweet girl with just a touch of spunk that I love. She has a twin sister, Buffy, and they couldn't be more different. Buffy is blonde-haired, brown eyes, thin and a princess. Dafne is a dark-haired, blue eyes, with a little curvy body and a tough girl who is described as gorgeous and Megan Fox's twin. I want a Dafne in my life.

And Ian. Oh, god. All I can say is; hot, hot, hot! Ian is Buffy's boyfriend. But really, you can feel the sparkles and tension between him and Dafne. You see at once that Ian isn't supposed to be with sweet, innocent Buffy but with tough, vulnerable and kind Dafne.

The end of the book didn't feel like you've jumped off a cliff only to be stopped in the middle off your fall and wondering what's going to happen next. It did leave you with a sense of closure, but it still left me thinking "No way! I want more!" but not it an bad way.

There was, however, some things I didn't like that made me stay away from Five stars and stick with my Four stars instead; the action.
Don't misunderstand me, the action was GOD, but I felt like the end of the story is rushed, like the author didn't quite know how to end it and kinda just went with it. It wasn't bad though, but I needed to ... see more. Like Dafne's best friend, what happened to her? That was actually the first question I asked myself after finishing this book.

That say; I did enjoy it, and will probably (most likely) read it again some times.

Would recommend it? Yes.
Will I re-read it? Yes.
Will you be sorry if you don't buy it) Yes, because it IS a good book. And hello, the prize aren't to hight either. Big plus.

Four Stars.
Okay, I liked Daphne, oh, sorry, Dafne. Despite her icy persona, it's her obvious vulnerability which makes her someone with whom we can empathize. I'd probably like Buffy, too, if we saw more of her; same with Aunt Morgan. The other characters are pretty much caricatures. Frankly, I hated Ian, and oould have really done without Comus. Then, there's the book's main concept, which, while patently absurd on the surface, at least gets props for originality. As someone with a Master's in music, I found the author's take on how the arts affect our pysches quite intriguing.

But, the grammar and syntax are, well, "wretched" seems to be the closest approximation I can come up with. My best guess is that this was written by someone for whom English is their second (or even third) language. (The use of infinitives where gerunds are called for is the biggest clue that this may be the case.) The errors are of the sort which should have been filtered out in elementary school, and made it impossible for me to finish the book. Don't people reread the darned things before releasing them for public consumption??? Now, the comments above refer to the 99-cent version of the story. Hopefully, a complete overhaul by a competent editor occurred before the $9.99 version was published. If not, anyone who paid ten bucks for this horror should seek an immediate refund.

Will I read more? Not in this lifetime. Not unless I find out the author has invested in, and mastered, Strunk and White.
