The Great Book of Rhubarb
By Elaine Lemm
Discover the history of rhubarb, which was widely used in medicines in China and Russia before it arrived on British shores in the 14th century and learn why it fell out of favour in the latter half of the 20th century only to rise again as an A-list celebrity of super foods in the 21st.
Rhubarb appears in pies, tarts, puddings, mousses and fools. From sophisticated jellies to hearty crumbles on a winters' day or as a sauce for meat or fish, rhubarb is at home on the main course as it is with the puddings. Add it to jam, to a chutney or relish, turn it from vegetable to wine or steep it in vodka.
Packed with handy tips and delicious recipes for using rhubarb in the kitchen, both as a dessert and part of a main course and even advice on growing rhubarb at home, The Great Book of Rhubarb covers everything you would ever need to know about this versatile vegetable.

Never thought I would enjoy a book about Rhubarb as much as I did. Also being from America I had no insight into 'forced rhubarb' and it place in British culture. I defiantly have new respect for that sprawling plant in my garden. Great read, thanks so much ElaineProduct details

The Great Book of Rhubarb edition by Elaine Lemm Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks Reviews
Rhubarb is for some reason an oft-overlooked vegetable. People either think it is a fruit, perhaps as it is often used mostly in desserts, or they just eschew it, full stop.
Yet rhubarb is quite versatile. You just need to know what you can do with it - and this book sets out to correct any misunderstandings and uncertainties that the reader may have about rhubarb, this reviewer included.
In this relatively small, concise book the information just keeps on flowing - in some ways the book is a little TOO compact and maybe a little more space and a little greater pagination would not be a bad thing. Starting with a great introduction and overview to the history of rhubarb, the reader is treated to information on the medicinal uses of this vegetable, alternative rhubarb usages such as a cleaning agent and even a Monty Python song about rhubarb. Want to grow your own? There's a section about that. Want to see rhubarb around the UK? Ditto.
The reader can find themselves a good chunk into the book before culinary aspects are really considered. Whether you want it roasted, stewed or raw, whether you will have a sweet or savoury dish there will be something that rhubarb can play a central role with. There is even a chicken curry with rhubarb mayonnaise. Truly (page 50 if you think you are being joked to!).
After reading all the interesting and, at times, possibly wacky uses of the rhubarb in food, the book almost grinds to a sudden halt at the end with a few drinks that use, yes, you've guessed it... Certainly at first glance this reviewer was a tad sceptical as to whether an entire book could justifiably be released about rhubarb. Well, it can be. What is more, it is a jolly interesting read too and the recipes are inviting, easy to follow and manage to find variety around a common theme.
Deceptively engaging and compelling to read.
Never thought I would enjoy a book about Rhubarb as much as I did. Also being from America I had no insight into 'forced rhubarb' and it place in British culture. I defiantly have new respect for that sprawling plant in my garden. Great read, thanks so much Elaine
