The Skeleton On Round Island From Mackinac And Lake Stories 1899 edition by Mary Hartwell Catherwood Reference eBooks
Ignace Pelott volunteers to transport Mamselle Rosalin, (for whom he has a secret love), from Mackinac to Cheboygan. His traino, (dog sled), is fit but the ice on the Strait is rotten and thawing. The two end up stranded for a while on Round Island. The tale is told in the first person by Pelott. It is told in an English/French dialect by a character of great charm and forthrightness. No spoilers, but there is dark, cold, wild animals, and, as you might have gathered from the title, a skeleton.
The tale is spare and direct, and its appeal lies in the honesty, candor and insight of Pelott, who manages to become an endearing character in a few short pages.
This is one of those little freebie pleasures that you can find wandering through the Kindle library, and it is well worth a look as an entertainment, and as an example of a carefully crafted short story.

The Skeleton On Round Island From Mackinac And Lake Stories 1899 edition by Mary Hartwell Catherwood Reference eBooks Reviews
What a fantastic short story! Spend 30 minutes with this story and you'll spend years thinking about it. And you can't beat free.
Well written, grabs your attention, holds it until the end. I liked the setting in Macinac, and the peek into life there in the late 1800s.
Very interesting and creepy look at early life in the Straits of Mackinac. I was intrigued by the title since the Round Island lighthouse is my favorite. The story is told in dialect so you can't help but hear the French trapper's accent. It's short and intriguing.
Great lakes tale of survival during a winter sled crossing during early 1800's. Short story that makes one want more.
A short recollection of courting in Mackinac, which recaptures the ethos of the Old Northwest and it's French and Native American heritage. It is recalled by a 93 year old voyageur in the 1890s in an authentic vernacular of the period. A must read for Michigan and Mackinac Island history buffs.
